LandArt '09 | JiuXian Arrival

Despite the constant rain and freezing temperatures during day 1 of Land Art 2009 Project at Jiu Xian; it could not have been better. 

After the long journey and needed rest, a lunch was held for everybody to get acquainted - Sara Yan, Filipa Silveira, Marina Carvalho, Rui Pinto Gonçalves, Vasco Luz, Tim Madeira, Denis Piel, Michel Batlle, Frederic Coustols, Gonçalo Leandro, Artur Cintra and the Chinese students Yang Qianquian, Zhang Weiqi.

At lunch there was debate about of Land Art 2009 Project, and was asked to each participant artist their interest on having applied; there was a common perspective: a new experience, cultural exchange and the chance to participate in such a noble project, and being able to assist on the promotion of the village of Jiu Xian and its inhabitants. 

The village located south of China, was born during th

e Ming Dynasty, and made the 28 hours trip seem to a journey back in time - almost five centuries. 

It is surrounded by mountains and lush vegetation, it will be a source of inspiration for the artists’ ability to create works in order to enhance the village and help the daily lives of its 1250 inhabitants. 

During the afternoon there was a visit to the town of Yang Shuo - which has about 300,000 inhabitants. The visit was designed to engage Jiu Xian’s nearest town, and understand the differences in life style, professional and personal activities, despite being only 8 Kms away. Having a lot of trade and strong movement, it enhances the quietness, tradition and architecture of Jiu Xian’s village. 

The day ended with a dinner where the discussion about how the work will be created on the village, in order to interact with Jiu Xian’s surrounding mountains and the itinerant route path that ending on the future museum. 

Tomorrow will begin with a stroll through the town to observe and define where and how this course will be, and what kind of work should be the most appropriate.
